Gender Pirate

Posted: November 18, 2008 in Uncategorized

This shot was taken a week before the election at Gender Pirates, a party put on by the United Genders of The Universe. This performer was part of the genderqueer performance group: FELLA-FEM. I did not ask for a pronoun. They might prefer he or she or and individual pronoun like zi. Writing this piece reminds me of how easy it is to assume a gender. Since taking this piece I have started to ask. To my surprise, the question is appreciated very greatly. Two different butchy, queer women have said that in San Francisco people assume wrongly that they prefer he. People feel seen when asked, and offended when an assumption is made. I recently heard this referred to as genderfucking someone.
