Playing with gender

Philipe has a seriously interesting look (This photo does not do justice.I will never again confuse fluorescent lighting for a decent lightsource ). Philipe was part of a panel discussion at CIIS about Genderqueers and therapy. I know from the discussion that Philipe prefers neither he nor she as a pronoun, but instead zi and zir for the possessive. I find it hard at first to switch. But, that very difficulty shows how embedded gender is in language. We assume gender before we have even talked to someone.
I am fascinated by Philipe’s outfit. Zi mixes gender in fascinating way. Zir look seems influenced by the boyish look that I have seen in queer butch fashion or among Female-To-Male (FTM) transgender fashion. However where those looks sometimes become very masculine. Zir outfit mixes in the feminine in a playful way. Zi fucks with the concept of gender. Yay! Down with gender!
